Mother Sofronia Serafina Erdelyi, OSBM

Basilian Missionary / 1884-1961
“The secret of holiness is love

She was born on August 10, 1884, in Kerestur Bachca, Yugoslavia, present-day Ruski Krstur, Serbia. Daughter of Nicolás Erdelyi and Juliana Arvaí; an exemplary family, with a deep love for God and neighbor. From a young age, she distinguished herself by her love for Jesus, evidenced in her life of prayer and works of charity. At the age of 16, she entered the novitiate of the female branch of Saint Basil the Great. Her baptismal name was Serafina and she took the monastic name: Sofronia. She studied Latin, Greek, philosophy, and pedagogy. She was a superior, professor, and mistress of novices. She spoke what was necessary, lived recollected in God. Her care in carrying out daily tasks served as edification for those who saw her daily.

In August 1939 she arrived in Argentina to accompany the Ukrainian immigrants dispersed throughout the vast territory. Her first destination was Apóstoles, Misiones. There: There were no houses. There were no resources. There was no organization. Only a great faith, trust in Divine Providence, and the spiritual assistance of only two Basilian Fathers to attend to countless souls thirsting for God. She took care of worship, the organization of a then-dispersed community, brought families together, and gathered children for catechesis, without neglecting the simple tasks of cleaning and decorating the temples.

Her love for God had something very particular, it was a love united to the most ardent desire for reparation for the sins of the world. Her humility and heroic charity were moving. Her spiritual life had three pillars:

  • The presence of God.
  • Humble service.
  • Love as a pleasing offering to God.

She suffered her illness with fortitude and offered it to the Lord for the Church and for the salvation of souls. She died in the odor of sanctity on October 14, 1961, in Buenos Aires. Today she is remembered as:

  • A compassionate, praying, and helpful woman and spiritual mother.
  • A wise and passionate educator.
  • A religious sister who always strove to cultivate fraternity and unity.
  • A spiritual counselor who led everyone to God.
